Journey Beyond Borders: Discover, Explore, Experience

A Quick Escape to the French Riviera: My November 2021 Adventure

November in Southern France might not be everyone’s first choice, but it definitely has its own charm. I hopped on a budget flight from London to Nice, hoping for a quick getaway. Nice was lovely, but after a couple of days, I found myself yearning for something new. Monaco, while glamorous, felt quiet in the off-season, leaving me craving more excitement.

Having visited the French Riviera, including Nice and Monaco, a few times before, I decided to explore further and took a coach to Marseille, the second-largest city in France. Known for its gritty reputation, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but Marseille surprised me with its vibrant character. The city was full of contrasts: stunning architecture, a bustling marina, and a revitalized cultural scene that added a fresh vibe.

One of the highlights of my trip was trekking up to the Notre-Dame de la Garde. This basilica, perched high on a hill, offers sweeping views of the city and the Mediterranean. It’s a cherished pilgrimage site, and while I visited in November, the calmness added to the spiritual atmosphere. Another memorable experience was dining in a small, cave-like restaurant run by nuns. The meal was simple but nostalgic, reminding me of my childhood in Poland and the time I spent with Catholic nuns, which made it deeply sentimental.

During my stay in Nice, I initially booked a dorm room in a hostel to keep things affordable. However, after a restless night and a few complaints about my snoring, I decided it was time to upgrade to a private room. The experience was a clear reminder that my hostel days are firmly behind me—comfort and a good night’s sleep now take precedence over budget-friendly dorm beds!

Before leaving Nice, I had the chance to meet some fascinating people in the hostel’s common areas. One evening, I chatted with a French digital nomad who shared stories about his travels and remote work life. Another interesting encounter was with a seasoned journalist originally from Africa, who had worked in television and traveled extensively. These moments reminded me of the diversity and richness of human connections, even if I’m no longer a fan of dorm living.

The journey from Marseille back to Nice by train was a scenic delight. The route runs along the French Riviera, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean, charming villages, and lush coastal landscapes. It was the perfect way to unwind and soak in the beauty of Southern France.

This trip was a refreshing mix of familiar and new. It reminded me that sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone, even just a little, can lead to some of the most rewarding experiences. The French Riviera continues to surprise and captivate, even after multiple visits.
