In March 2019, I took a dirt-cheap flight from London Luton to Verona, and it turned out to be one of my favorite city breaks. Verona, famous for being the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is a small yet enchanting city in northern Italy that effortlessly combines history with charm.
The heart of the city is Piazza delle Erbe, a bustling square surrounded by colorful buildings, market stalls, and cafes. Nearby, you can visit Juliet’s Balcony, a tourist hotspot but worth a quick visit if you’re in the mood for some Shakespearean romance. Piazza Bra is home to the grand Verona Arena, a Roman amphitheater still in use today for concerts and opera performances.
One of the highlights of my trip was climbing the hills surrounding Verona. From the top, the views overlooking the city center, with its red-tiled rooftops, ancient bridges, and the Adige River winding through, were absolutely stunning. If you have the chance, head up to Castel San Pietro for the best panoramic view.
Verona may be small, but it’s full of character and charm, making it a perfect destination for a short getaway. I left with fond memories and the feeling that sometimes, the best trips are the ones you least expect.
