In November 2017, I took a spontaneous weekend trip to Lyon, thanks to a great deal on plane tickets. It was one of those quick, no-fuss escapades that turned out to be unforgettable. From the moment I arrived, Lyon charmed me with its blend of convenience, beauty, and rich history.
A Smooth Start
Flying into Lyon–Saint Exupéry Airport was a breeze. The airport was modern and well-organized, but what stood out was the excellent Rhônexpress train connection into the city. In no time, I found myself in the heart of Lyon, ready to explore.
Architectural Marvels
Lyon’s architecture is truly something special. Wandering through Vieux Lyon, the city’s Old Town, I felt like I’d stepped back in time. Its cobblestone streets, Renaissance buildings, and hidden “traboules” (narrow passageways) were fascinating to explore. Across the Saône River, the grandeur of Place Bellecour and the Presqu’île district showcased Lyon’s elegant charm. The city felt like a harmonious blend of history and modernity.
Relaxing on the Rivers
One of my favorite moments was a boat trip on the Rhône and Saône rivers. Lyon’s unique location at the confluence of these two rivers makes for stunning waterside views. From the boat, I enjoyed panoramic sights of the city’s landmarks, bridges, and riverside promenades. It was a peaceful and picturesque way to take in the essence of Lyon.
A Weekend Well Spent
Lyon offered the perfect balance of cultural exploration and relaxation. Its welcoming atmosphere, striking architecture, and scenic rivers made it a fantastic destination for a weekend getaway. It’s a city that left me with great memories—and I wouldn’t hesitate to return for another visit.
